The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program offers opportunities for independent research and study related to Smithsonian collections, facilities, and/or research interests of the Institution and its staff. Fellowships are offered to graduate students, predoctoral students, and postdoctoral and senior investigators to conduct independent research and to utilize the resources of the Institution with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff serving as advisors and hosts. These fellowships are offered through the Smithsonian’s Office of Academic Appointments and Internships, and are administered under the charter of the Institution, 20 U.S. Code section 41 et seq.

Applicants to the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program must propose to conduct research in a discipline pursued at the Smithsonian and must submit a specific and detailed research proposal indicating why the Smithsonian is an appropriate place to carry out the study. Applications are now open for the Sue Hunter Animal Welfare Grant! 


The Sue Hunter Animal Welfare Grant is an annual competitive grant that will provide financial support up to $2,000 addressing the following criteria. The grant should include at least 1 of the following criteria (Note: Documenting and evaluating how the assistance will help your program will be necessary to receive funding for your project):


-A program that needs assistance with purchasing materials for operant conditioning training.


-A program that needs assistance with purchasing materials for animal enrichment needs.


-A program that could use assistance with funds for a conservation project that is effecting a positive change for the conservation of a species.

U Washington Scholarship for Certificate in Applied Animal Behavior

University of Washington Professional & Continuing Education’s Certificate in Applied Animal Behavior program is pleased to announce scholarship support for students through the Applied Animal Behavior Scholarship Fund and the Department of Psychology. The purpose of this fund is to provide merit-based financial assistance to students who have applied to the Certificate in Applied Animal Behavior program.

The fund will award up to three scholarships for the 2024-2025 certificate program. One award will cover full course costs, excluding fees ($3,645, or $1,215 per quarter), and two awards will be for $1,500, or $500 per quarter. Awards will be applied directly to the recipients' program costs each quarter.

  • Applicants must have an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for merit-based scholarships.  Applicants may have a minimum 2.5 GPA for non-merit-based donor scholarships.
